Many students pursuing the Master’s Degree in Health Care are those who already have careers in the health care area. Other may be those who are considering changing careers and want to pursue a degree while they maintaining a full-time job. That is why online degree programs are vital to fulfilling that need. This list provides rankings of the best programs that provide online master’s degree programs in health care. The list gives a summary of the degrees and programs, the key features of the programs or college and a brief list of specialties of that particular online master’s program.

How We Came Up With The Rankings

The Rankings for the Online Masters in Health Care were based on selecting Master’s degree programs where students can earn their degree online. We selected programs that were either 100 percent online or ones that had hybrid programs where a significant portion of the curriculum could be obtained online. We also included accredited programs and online programs that offered the same courses as the campus-based curriculum. Other considerations were the quality of the health care program and if the programs or the college were ranked/mentioned by publications such as U.S. News and World Report, Princeton Review and other prestigious publications. Health care programs that had faculty that were health care practitioners or had courses that were developed or recommended by health care professionals were also used to develop the rankings.

    About This School

Rush University College of Nursing offers a wide range of online nursing programs; including: Master’s (MSN), Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing Science, as well as Postgraduate Non-Degree Certificate options.

The mission of Rush University College of Nursing is to protect the health of the public through the preparation of the future leaders in nursing practice, education and research. Today, well over 7,000 baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral students have graduated from Rush University College of Nursing. The first bachelor’s and master’s degrees were awarded in 1975; the first Doctor of Nursing Science degree was awarded in 1980; the first practice doctorate was awarded in 1990. Enrollments for current nursing programs are offered from the master’s through the doctoral (DNP and PhD) levels. The last baccalaureate class graduated in June 2009. The generalist entry master’s (GEM) is the prelicensure program for entry into RN practice.

US News and World report ranks Rush University College of Nursing 15th in the nation among 467 nursing colleges with graduate programs, and six nursing specialties are ranked in the top ten. Rush is the only ranked university with an exclusive health science focus. Our graduates are highly sought after by employers for their excellent clinical and leadership preparation and ability to focus on improving health outcomes at a systems level.

Students learn in a dynamic environment where teaching, clinical practice and research are integrated. Faculty “practice what they teach”. Over seventy-five percent of the Rush University College of Nursing faculty members are doctorally prepared and many are Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing. A low student-to-faculty ratio allows for increased interaction in class and clinical experience and greater personal attention for the student.

The on-campus Direct Entry Master’s (MSN) for Non-Nurses: Generalist Entry Master’s (GEM) Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) program at Rush University College of Nursing comprehensively prepares students to be graduate (MSN) registered nurse (RN) clinicians with a focus in clinical leadership. Graduates are prepared to function at a high level in inpatient, out-patient and community settings. This program is for students who already have a bachelor’s degree. This program is only offered on campus and cannot be completed online.
The online Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) for RNs: Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) program is responsible for clinical management of comprehensive client care, for individuals and clinical populations across the continuum of care, and in multiple settings. The CNL assumes leadership/accountability for health outcomes for a specific group of clients within a unit or setting through the assimilation and application of research-based information to design, implement and evaluate plans of care. The clinical nurse leader is also responsible for the coordination and planning of care team activities and functions. Health promotion, risk reduction and improvement in point-of-care outcomes are critical elements in the role of the clinical nurse leader.
In addition to the MSN options, Rush University College of Nursing offers a number of online terminal degree choices for registered nurses that hold a minimum of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN). Online degree programs include the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree (DNP) in various Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Nurse Specialist specialties. In addition, Rush also offers two online post-masters leadership DNP programs (Systems Leadership and Leadership to Enhance Population Health Outcomes). Post-Graduate Certificates are available for current Advance Practice Nurses (MSN or DNP) who wish to specialize in a different clinical area. Please click here to see the complete list of Rush’s online degree options. Short campus visits are necessary for all these programs.
